Boring Practice Sessions

“I don’t want to practice, it’s boring” A common reason, and something that should be sending up flares to anyone that hears it. If their practice is boring, then there’s definitely something wrong.

Thankfully, most of this has already been covered in this blog. To make things interesting, you just need to make a few small changes to how you practice. Take a read of a few of these posts for ideas.

Interesting Scales - scales are probably the biggest cause of boredom. While you’re probably never going to make scales your favourite thing to practice, here’s a few ways to sugar-coat the medicine.

The Power of 7 minutes - Maybe you need to change what you’re practicing often, so that your mind doesn’t have a chance to get bored. I use blocks of 7 minutes, but you could also use blocks of 3 minutes as well.

15 things you can practice in 10 minutes - Sometimes you might need a little variety to get you started. Try 10 minutes doing one of these suggestions to get you started.

“Play” Music - You enjoy playing your video games, or playing sport, why not play your instrument? Get back to the enjoyment of playing around on your instrument.

TV Channels - Keep switching your mind onto different things to make your practice more interesting, and more effective.

Fitness Training - Get that practice into shape with some fitness training. Scales, Sight-reading and Theory

There’s many more ideas, and I’d love to hear any you have on how to make your practice more interesting.
