But I don’t wanna…

Learning an instrument is a big commitment. It requires years of practice, every day. Sometimes you won’t want to practice, for a variety of reasons. You need to recognise the reason, and react to it.

The first step is to identify the reason why you don’t want to practice. Sometimes it can be because the prospect of practicing every day is daunting. Another could be because your parents nag you all the time (and if you’re anything like me, as soon as my parents nag me about something, it’s the last thing I want to do). The trick is to identify what’s stopping you from practicing, and then figuring out what you can do to change it.

But remember, “I just don’t want to practice” isn’t good enough. Really look into it, and find out what it is that’s stopping you. Is it boring? Are you struggling with new pieces, or feeling like you’re making no progress? Identifying the problem is the first step.

This week, I’ll be posting a series of posts looking at common reasons as to why you might not want to practice, and some solutions that you might like to consider.
